Unveiling the Generosity: How the Moss Family and Friedrichs Family Opened New Possibilities for Canyon Camp

On Saturday, October 12, the Canyon Camp community gathered for a heartfelt celebration, as part of the annual Monroe Kiwanis Woodcutters' Ball, to share thanks to the generous donation from the Moss family and to Ken and Angie Friedrichs.

Bob, Janet (Whiton), and Jim Moss made significant gifts in honor of their father, Elmer Moss to Canyon Camp, and separately in honor of their mother, Vivian Moss through a lead gift made to the local hospital system. These donations are more than just financial contributions; they honor their family's legacy and the strong values instilled by their parents.

The Moss family's gift, spearheaded by Bob Moss alongside his siblings, aims to ensure that their parents' legacy continues to thrive, impacting lives in the community for many years. Their thoughtful contributions remind us of the importance of gratitude and remembrance for those dedicated to serving others.

A Legacy of Service: Honoring Elmer and Vivian Moss

Elmer Moss dedicated much of his life to Scouting, impacting countless young people in the region. Through years of service, he helped shape their character and leadership skills. Elmer worked as a plumber, contributing to his family’s well-being while serving the local and camp community.

Vivian Moss, too, left an indelible mark through her career in healthcare. Her compassion and commitment to helping others reflect values that are essential in today’s world. They inspire future generations to engage in meaningful activities that promote personal growth and community welfare.

Many of the volunteers today who knew the Moss family as they participated in Scouting activities often speak about Elmer's care and how his mentorship led them to pursue careers in the trades. Being a dad at Camp is something that left a positive mark and shows the far-reaching effects of Scouting and his dedication. This legacy of care and support is the driving force behind the Moss family’s commitment to furthering their parents' values.

Celebrating Community Support: The Role of Ken and Angie Friedrichs

Alongside the Moss family's generosity, the Friedrichs family has played a pivotal role in advancing projects at Canyon Camp. Ken and Angie Friedrichs have long been champions of Canyon Camp, investing their time and resources to strengthen ties with the community.

Ken's lead gift facilitated the necessary funding for the remediation and removal of the old farmhouse, a key step in paving the way for the new maintenance building project supported by the Moss family's gift. This collaboration underscores the potential of community engagement, revealing how contributions can revitalize important spaces at Canyon Camp.

As an example, the Friedrichs’ contributions over the years has helped to enhance camp's facilities and programs through initiatives such as the climbing/zip-line/COPE facility and more. This has helped retrain and increase youth participation in summer programs. Their efforts show that community commitment can have tangible benefits.

Transforming Visions into Reality: The Impact of Charitable Contributions

The charitable acts from the Moss and Friedrichs families represent a profound commitment to the Scouts served at Canyon Camp. Such donations open doors to opportunities that help youth and families thrive, ensuring that facilities at Camp continue to serve their mission effectively.

The new maintenance building acts as a hub for various activities and provides support behind the scenes to the entire Camp. Already we have begun using this space to build new platforms for campsites.

The Moss and Friedrichs gifts serves as an inspiration, leading to more opportunities for young people at Canyon Camp and beyond. It is a true honor to be able to do so while lifting up the memory and legacy of Elmer Moss. The Spirit of Canyon Camp thrives through his years of service and his family who shares this passion with the next generation.
